Current HPI guidance requires English at B2 where proof is needed. Do not rely on an older B1 article or assume an English-medium university letter automatically completes the requirement. Choose an accepted evidence path and check what that path must demonstrate before ordering tests or assessments.

Start with the current requirement

The official HPI English page now states B2 for reading, writing, speaking and understanding English. It describes qualifications, assessment, approved testing and circumstances where fresh proof may not be necessary. Check the page for your own situation rather than using a general English-test comparison article. A product marketed for study, employment or migration may not be the exact evidence needed here.

Record your nationality, relevant school qualifications, degrees and any previous successful visa application where English was proved. These facts help identify the evidence category; none should be inferred from your current country of residence. A person living in an English-speaking workplace still needs an accepted evidence path if the rules require proof. Practical fluency and documentary compliance are related but different questions.

Keep degree eligibility and English evidence apart

An eligible overseas degree supports the academic part of HPI. Whether it also provides acceptable English evidence is a separate question. If using a non-UK degree taught in English, follow the official assessment instructions. Do not assume that the academic level assessment automatically confirms the language of teaching unless the actual service and result do so. Read what the certificate or code confirms.

Similarly, a UK qualification might help demonstrate English without being the overseas qualification relied upon for HPI academic eligibility. Do not merge the two records into one simplified claim that any UK graduate qualifies for HPI. Keep a document map: qualification used for the route's academic requirement, and evidence used for English. The distinction can prevent an otherwise well-organised application from answering the wrong question.

If you need a test, select the exact approved product

Use the approved test-provider route linked from GOV.UK. Check the product, skills covered, required level, location and identity requirements. A provider may sell several tests under similar names. Confirm the specific test is appropriate for immigration evidence rather than assuming a university-admissions score is interchangeable. Review how the result will be verified and what reference is issued.

Plan preparation around the four skills, not only an overall score. Book with enough time for results and a legitimate resit if necessary. Do not purchase a certificate without taking the required test or accept an intermediary's offer to arrange the score. Keep the booking, identity details and original result privately, and correct genuine name errors through the provider's process.

If relying on a qualification, identify the complete chain

List the awarding institution, qualification, language evidence and any assessment needed. Where the institution must supply a record, contact the registrar directly using verified contact details. Ask for the appropriate genuine document rather than requesting a letter with wording invented by an agent. If the university cannot confirm a particular fact, do not turn a third party's draft into an apparently official statement.

Check name consistency and the relationship between any assessment identifier and the passport. Keep originals and translations together. If a previous assessment is being reused, confirm that it addresses the question now being asked. A document's age alone is not the whole analysis; its purpose, content and the current rules matter. Where the position is unclear, ask the service provider or a regulated adviser a specific question.

Avoid duplicate spending

An applicant might order an English test while also ordering a qualification service that can provide the needed English confirmation. Another might order only an academic assessment and discover that the English evidence remains incomplete. Both problems come from buying products before mapping requirements. The worksheet asks what each item proves, which requirement it serves and whether another item duplicates it.

Compare the direct costs, time and certainty of obtaining the necessary records. An assessment path can depend on a university response; a test path can depend on appointments and preparation. The cheapest advertised product is not always the quickest usable evidence. Choose on the basis of the accepted requirement and your real records, not a general claim that one method is best for everyone.

Close the evidence task without overclaiming

Mark the workstream complete when the accepted evidence exists, is readable and matches the application identity. Preserve the source date and any written clarification. Do not turn completion into an overall HPI eligibility statement; the university list, award date, finances and other requirements still need their own checks. A route-fit planner should therefore show English ready as one item among several.

Use the English decision sheet before paying and again before submission. It is particularly useful where several advisers have given different suggestions. Ask each to identify the accepted category and supporting source. A clear evidence path reduces confusion and unnecessary expense while keeping the final application grounded in genuine records.

A worked decision example

An illustrative applicant reads an old B1 guide and books a familiar test product. The evidence review checks the current B2 page, then asks whether that product and the existing qualification records meet the chosen evidence path. The applicant corrects the plan through the provider's genuine process before submission. The example is not a judgement on a particular test or degree. It shows why a dated official source, the exact product and what the result proves must be considered together, rather than treating an English-test brand name as a complete immigration evidence decision.

Official sources checked 15 October 2026. Recheck the linked guidance before applying. This is general information, not an individual immigration assessment.

A useful next step

Use the HPI B2 English evidence decision sheet to turn this guide into a working plan. Continue with HPI maintenance: evidence the savings without confusing them with a relocation budget when you are ready to organise the next part of the file.
