HPI applicants generally need £1,270 in accessible savings unless an exemption applies. Current guidance requires the money for 28 consecutive days, with day 28 within 31 days of applying. That is an application evidence requirement; it is not a realistic estimate of everything needed to move to the UK.

Confirm the requirement before arranging money

Read the official costs and maintenance guidance for the current amount, holding period and exemption. In particular, a period of qualifying UK residence can affect whether proof is required. Record why you need evidence or why a specified exemption applies. A simple checkbox saying already in the UK is not enough: the relevant status and duration need to be checked.

Keep the evidence category separate from the source of your wider household wealth. A family property, future salary or credit limit should not be treated as an accessible qualifying balance without checking the rules. If the financial arrangement is unusual, document the facts and seek a specific assessment. A planner should expose uncertainty, not convert every available asset into a total labelled sufficient funds.

Build the date chain

Record when the full qualifying amount first exists, the continuous period end, the statement or letter issue date and the intended application date. Keep the identity appointment date in a separate row. Calculate actual calendar days rather than writing one month. Leave practical time for a bank correction, translation or application delay. The first possible date is not always the most workable date.

Use original account records to check the minimum balance during the period. A closing balance does not prove that the money remained available throughout. Bank charges, transfers and automated payments can matter. If an account is in another currency, check the required conversion method and allow a prudent planning margin. Label that margin as your contingency rather than inventing an extra legal threshold.

Protect the evidence balance from application spending

The qualification assessment, visa fee and health surcharge are separate costs. If you pay them from the same account that supports maintenance evidence, review the resulting balance and timing. Do not assume the application costs can simply be subtracted from the required savings. Create a payment plan showing which account funds each expense and who can authorise withdrawals during the evidence period.

An illustrative graduate may have £1,500 equivalent in an account and think the maintenance check is comfortable, but a large assessment or travel payment could change that. The appropriate action is to recalculate from genuine records, not to hide the transaction. A separate spending reserve can make administration clearer, provided the arrangement itself complies with the evidence rules.

Ask the bank for usable evidence

Read the evidence instructions before requesting a document. Check account-holder name, currency, period covered, balance information and authenticity. Obtain complete readable records and any required translation. A mobile screenshot may show a current sum while failing to demonstrate the relevant history. A generic letter saying the applicant is a valued customer does not answer the same question as evidence of available money.

If your name changed, organise the genuine connection between the bank record and identity document. If multiple accounts are proposed, map the dates and amounts clearly and check whether the arrangement is permitted. Do not edit statements or ask a bank employee to backdate a letter. Where the facts do not meet the requirement, change the plan and timing rather than the documents.

Add dependants as a separate calculation

An eligible partner or child has additional financial and application considerations. Use the official family guidance for the relevant maintenance amounts and any exemption, then add each person's visa costs and surcharge. Do not assume that £1,270 covers an entire household. A staggered family application can also produce different evidence dates, so give each application its own timeline.

Keep a household cash budget alongside the legal calculation. Housing deposits, initial rent, food, transport and a delayed first salary can exceed the minimum evidence figure quickly. The correct question is not whether the threshold seems generous. It is whether the plan has enough genuinely available money for both the application and the period before income arrives.

Run a final evidence review

Have a second person identify the requirement, qualifying period, minimum balance and application date from the records. They should not need an elaborate verbal explanation to understand the sequence. If the application is postponed, check the dates again. A previously valid statement can become too old for the new plan, and a fresh statement can reveal later withdrawals that need consideration.

The savings worksheet tracks the legal evidence question and the separate relocation reserve. Use it before ordering a bank letter and before submission. Its final action box should say either that the records support the current plan or identify what must change. A calm, documented pause is more useful than a confident label built on an untested closing balance.

A worked decision example

An illustrative applicant holds the required savings but plans to use the same account for a qualification payment and a housing deposit. The calendar records both withdrawals and reconstructs the historical balance before the application date is selected. If the facts no longer support the plan, the applicant changes timing or funding arrangements lawfully rather than asking for a different-looking statement. The separate reserve column also shows whether the move is affordable after fees. This example demonstrates the distinction between a qualifying evidence history and a present-day balance; it does not assess any individual's bank evidence.
