The HPI qualification assessment and the official university-list check are different tasks. Build an authentic academic file, choose the service indicated by current official guidance and make sure you understand what the assessment confirms. Do not pay for an unrelated comparison product simply because it has the same provider name.

Define the assessment you need

GOV.UK directs HPI applicants to Ecctis to check qualification validity and level. Its eligibility page also says Ecctis will not check whether the university is eligible. That means your preparation needs two records: the correct award-period list match, and the qualification assessment. If English evidence is also needed, check whether your chosen assessment addresses that question or whether a different evidence path applies.

Follow the service link from the official route guidance and read the current provider instructions, requirements, price and processing information. Service names and procedures can change. Do not rely on an old tutorial to choose a product or assume a general statement of comparability is automatically the record required for this route. Keep the service description and order confirmation privately so you can identify exactly what was requested.

Assemble the academic source file

Create an inventory of the award certificate, final transcript, institution details and any other documents the service asks for. Record the name and award date as shown, not as remembered. If the final certificate has not been issued, ask the provider which alternative evidence it accepts before uploading a provisional result. A congratulatory email and a formal award record do not necessarily answer the same question.

Check that scans are complete, legible and include both sides where relevant. Do not crop out seals, page numbers or explanatory notes. If a document is not in the required language, follow the translation instructions and keep the original paired with the translation. A self-written translation or altered scan should not be presented as an official academic record.

Resolve identity differences before they become delays

Names can differ because of marriage, transliteration, initials or a university's formatting. List the exact versions across the passport, certificate and transcript, then collect genuine connecting evidence as appropriate. Ask the provider how to present the difference. Do not edit the degree file to make it match the passport. The objective is a transparent chain, not a cosmetically uniform set of documents.

Where an institution has merged or changed name, keep the official evidence connecting the historic award to the current institution. Where a joint or transnational programme is involved, identify the awarding body and teaching location separately. Avoid assuming that the most prestigious name appearing in the programme materials is necessarily the awarding institution relevant to HPI.

Prepare the university to answer verification requests

Identify the registrar or records office using the institution's genuine website. Ask how award verification is handled, whether a consent form is needed and whether older records require additional time. Do not send login credentials or unrestricted access to a student account to an intermediary. If the institution offers an official digital verification service, follow the provider's instructions for sharing it securely.

Keep a communication log with the date, contact, request and response. If a verification delay occurs, this helps you explain what has been done and ask a precise follow-up question. It also exposes an intake or application-window risk early. A status reading submitted is not the same as a completed assessment, and an estimated processing time is not a promise that the university will respond immediately.

Budget the assessment in the right place

The current HPI cost page lists £252 for the qualification check, including VAT. Confirm the service and final payable price before ordering, especially if additional work is needed. Keep this as a spent application-preparation cost, separate from maintenance funds and the later visa fee. The fact that an assessment has been paid for does not mean the immigration application should proceed if another requirement is unresolved.

Consider an illustrative graduate approaching the five-year boundary. Their first priority is to establish the formal award date and obtain the required records. They should not assume that paying for an assessment secures the route or pauses the time limit. A realistic plan includes provider requirements, university response time and the intended visa application date, with individual advice if the boundary is close.

Audit the result before using it

When the result arrives, check identity, qualification, institution and what the statement or identifier actually confirms. Keep the certificate or unique identifier as instructed by the official document guidance. If a material detail is wrong, contact the provider through its genuine support process. Do not amend the result yourself or rely on an agent's verbal assurance that a mismatch will be ignored.

Use the assessment worksheet to track the service, required records, verification contact and result audit. Its final row asks which HPI questions remain outside Ecctis: the official list match, timing, previous-route history, English where not covered, money and other application requirements. That separation keeps a useful academic assessment from being mistaken for a complete eligibility decision.

A worked decision example

An illustrative graduate has a final transcript but a delayed award certificate. Instead of uploading a homemade explanation and assuming it will suffice, they check the service's accepted alternatives and contact the registrar for an authentic record. They also ask whether the selected assessment covers only qualification level or an English question. The request log tracks both answers and the effect on timing. This example does not prescribe which alternative Ecctis will accept. It shows how to turn a document gap into a precise provider question before paying for the wrong service or relying on an incomplete file.
