For HPI, find the official university list covering the month and year your qualification was awarded. Then check the awarding institution and qualification, the five-year window and the other route requirements. A university appearing in a current ranking is not enough to establish eligibility.
Find the academic event that matters
Locate the formal award date on the degree or an official university record. Do not automatically use the graduation ceremony, final exam, dissertation submission or day the certificate arrived by post. If those dates differ, ask the awarding institution for clarification and preserve its response. A date uncertainty near the five-year boundary is a reason for careful review before spending money, not a reason to choose the most convenient date.
The official eligibility page directs applicants to the list corresponding to the award period. The lists use specific date ranges. As checked on 15 October 2026, the published 2025 list covers awards from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. That does not mean everyone applying during 2026 uses that list. Someone awarded a degree in an earlier period must check the earlier period's list.
Match the awarding institution precisely
Use the institution that awarded the qualification. A partner college, teaching centre, branch campus or joint programme can require clarification. Do not assume that an institution with a similar name is the listed university or that a campus arrangement automatically shares the same treatment. Record the exact name on the award and compare it with the official list. Where there is a material ambiguity, obtain an answer from the relevant official service or an adviser before proceeding.
Avoid replacing the list with a commercial ranking, an alumni social-media post or a cached screenshot. University rankings change, while the eligibility question uses a defined official award-period list. Keep the source URL, applicable period and date checked in the worksheet. If the institution is absent, do not describe the person as eligible on the basis that it was listed in another year.
Check the qualification and assessment separately
HPI requires an eligible overseas qualification at the relevant degree level and an Ecctis check of qualification validity and level. Ecctis does not decide whether the university appears on the correct HPI list, according to GOV.UK. These are separate checks. A positive academic assessment should not be presented as a Home Office visa approval, nor should a list match be presented as proof that the qualification has completed all required assessment.
Write the evidence chain: institution and award date, correct list match, qualification level, assessment record and other route requirements. If a joint degree produces multiple documents, keep a clear explanation of which award is relied upon. Do not combine the date of one qualification with the institution of another to construct a match that does not exist in the records.
Calculate the five-year window before creating a relocation plan
Compare the genuine award date with the intended application date. Use exact dates and check the current rule, especially near a boundary. Leave room for obtaining documents and an assessment. An applicant nearing five years should not assume that starting an Ecctis request freezes the immigration deadline. If the calendar is tight, obtain specific advice before relying on an unofficial calculator.
The route also has a yearly application limit. The current application year runs from 1 November to 31 October. Do not infer from this that places are currently available or that an individual holds a reserved place; the official application process indicates when the limit has been reached. A preparation website cannot provide a reliable live remaining-place count without an authorised official source.
Check the less visible eligibility questions
Record any previous HPI permission, Graduate permission or Doctorate Extension Scheme history. The route has restrictions concerning previous use of these categories. English, finances, suitability and application validity also matter. A first-stage list check should therefore return a useful next task, rather than a green badge saying the applicant is approved. Unknown facts should remain unknown until documented.
Nationality is not the main academic screen. A person living in India or Nigeria may hold a degree from a listed overseas institution, while a person from a country with many listed universities may have an unlisted award. Segment the research by qualification and stage, then consider nationality and residence where they affect documents, testing or practical logistics.
Use a short audit to avoid expensive assumptions
The award-date worksheet records the exact award, official period, institutional match, assessment status and previous-route history. Complete it before paying for travel, resigning or accepting an agent's package. For an uncertain item, write the question and who can answer it. An honest unresolved result is more valuable than a premature eligibility label.
If HPI is not a fit, investigate other routes on their own terms. UK graduates may have a Graduate route question; a qualifying sponsored job or a strong talent case raises different evidence requirements. The role of this publication is to direct the reader to the right preparation path, not to turn a non-match into a promise that another route is guaranteed.
A worked decision example
An illustrative alumnus sees their university on the latest official list and begins planning a move. Their degree was awarded in an earlier period, so the audit opens that period's list instead. The institution name and formal award record are checked before the person orders further services. If the result is uncertain, the worksheet records the exact question rather than declaring eligibility. The value is an early, inexpensive correction to the research path: the applicant uses the relevant official list, not the list that happens to be newest when they search.
