HPI and Graduate are different routes with different academic starting points. HPI relies on a recent eligible overseas qualification and the applicable university list. Graduate relies on eligible UK study, current Student-related permission and the required completion process. Neither should be chosen from a headline promising unsponsored work alone.

Start with the qualification and current status

Write down where the qualification was awarded, the formal award date, the course studied and current immigration permission. For HPI, check the official overseas university and qualification requirements. For Graduate, check the official UK course and status requirements. A person having several degrees should map each one separately rather than blending facts from different awards into a single assumed route.

UK universities are not the eligible overseas universities for HPI. Conversely, a degree from a listed overseas institution does not by itself establish Graduate eligibility. The route names can sound similar, but their evidence chains differ. A comparison page should send the reader to the correct qualification check before discussing work freedom, duration or costs.

Check previous permission before comparing price

HPI has restrictions concerning previous HPI, Graduate and Doctorate Extension Scheme use. Do not treat the routes as two products that everyone can buy consecutively. Record each previous grant and its dates, including permissions that may not appear in the most recent passport. If the history is unclear, obtain the decision records or individual advice before paying for an assessment.

Graduate also has its own requirements and limitations. A valid Student visa alone is not enough: the course, period of study and sponsor's completion notification matter. A person who left a course early or received a different award should not assume the standard comparison still applies. Ask the university to explain the actual completion position.

Compare the period using the right date

HPI generally provides two years, or three for a qualifying doctorate. Current Graduate rules provide two years for most eligible non-doctoral applicants applying on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months from 1 January 2027; doctoral graduates retain three years. The application date matters for the Graduate change. Do not use the course start date or an old admissions brochure as the basis for the comparison.

Both routes are finite and cannot simply be extended. A longer period may be useful, but duration is only one factor after eligibility is established. Compare the actual costs, household position, career readiness and future options. Neither route supplies a job or guarantees a later sponsored role, endorsement or settlement outcome.

Map the evidence work for each possible path

HPI preparation can involve the award-period list, qualification assessment, English and maintenance evidence. Graduate preparation centres on its own eligibility and completion conditions. Use separate checklists with links to current official instructions. Do not order an HPI qualification service merely because it sounds relevant to every graduate visa, or assume a university's completion email answers an HPI list question.

For costs, use current official pages and the actual intended permission length. Keep fees, health surcharge and living expenses separate. If a household is involved, check the dependant provisions under the specific route. A route available to the principal applicant does not automatically provide the same options for every relative or newly joining family member.

Compare career scenarios rather than marketing claims

Define what the unsponsored period would be used for: gaining relevant experience, exploring employers, developing a genuine venture or preparing an evidence-based next route. List the practical barriers, such as professional registration, portfolio quality or geographic constraints. A comparison that lists only benefits can conceal the fact that the applicant is not yet ready to use the time effectively.

Run a no-job financial scenario for each feasible path. Include the cost of the application and a realistic period of living expenses. Ask whether waiting, obtaining experience overseas or applying directly for a qualifying sponsored role is worth investigating. These are decision options, not recommendations that one route is universally better.

Keep the longer-term plan conditional

HPI and Graduate do not themselves provide a direct settlement route. A later switch depends on meeting another route's current requirements. Avoid calculating a settlement date from an assumed future job or an unverified claim that all residence counts the same way. Where long residence or mixed immigration histories matter, obtain advice on the actual facts rather than relying on a broad comparison.

Use the comparison worksheet to record eligibility gates first, then costs, runway and the next decision. If only one route is plausible, stop comparing features and complete that route's evidence check. If neither is plausible, investigate other options independently. The useful result is clarity about the right preparation path, not a winner selected from a table of attractive benefits.

A worked decision example

Consider an illustrative applicant with a recent UK master's degree and an earlier overseas bachelor's degree. The comparison does not simply choose whichever duration looks longer. It checks the UK completion and current-permission facts for Graduate, the overseas award-period list and five-year window for HPI, and the effect of previous route use. Costs are compared only after those gates. If one route is unavailable, the person stops comparing its benefits and concentrates on the plausible path. The example demonstrates a decision method, not an eligibility verdict for everyone holding two degrees or a recommendation to buy a qualification assessment.
