Eligible partners and children can apply as HPI dependants, but each person has their own evidence, cost and timing questions. Start with a household matrix rather than assuming the principal applicant's qualification assessment covers everyone. A joint move and a staggered move can create different practical pressures.
Identify each person's position
List the principal applicant, partner and each child separately. Record current country, nationality, current permission if any, relationship and intended application location. Use exact ages and dates where they matter. Keep passport numbers outside the planning worksheet. The official family guidance sets out who can apply and what relationships need to be demonstrated; a shared address alone is not the whole assessment.
For partners, read the current relationship categories and evidence provisions. Do not reduce every case to a marriage certificate or assume an unmarried relationship automatically fails because the couple lived apart. The official guidance discusses situations where an enduring relationship exists without cohabitation. Complex histories, separation, children from earlier relationships or responsibility questions may need an individual regulated assessment.
Map genuine relationship evidence
Build a chronology of the relationship and family arrangements, then identify appropriate documents. Preserve official records, translations and the chain connecting name changes. For a child, establish parentage and relevant living arrangements. Avoid uploading a large unfiltered archive of private messages when selected relevant evidence can explain the issue more clearly. The evidence should answer the applicable requirement, not overwhelm the reader.
If a document is missing, contact the issuing authority for the genuine record and ask how long replacement takes. Do not allow an intermediary to create a substitute that appears official. Keep a task log with request date, contact and expected response. A civil-record delay can become the critical path for the family application even when the principal applicant's academic evidence is ready.
Calculate maintenance per household member
Current HPI family guidance lists £285 for a partner, £315 for the first child and £200 for each additional child, alongside the principal applicant's £1,270 where required. It also sets out the relevant holding period and exemptions. Apply the current rules to the actual family and dates rather than copying a total from another household. If one person applies later, recheck their evidence position at that time.
These are evidence amounts, not a realistic family living budget. Housing, childcare, school transport, travel and initial furnishing can be much larger. Run a no-income household scenario and agree who funds any delay. If a partner expects to work in a regulated profession, check the professional authorisation process before treating immediate earnings as certain.
Add fees and health surcharge separately
Each application has costs. The health surcharge differs by age and permission length; use the current official calculation for each person. Do not multiply the principal applicant's total indiscriminately across adults and children. Keep an application-cost ledger with the payer and payment date, separate from maintenance and living expenses. If money leaves an evidence account, review the effect on its balance and timing.
Compare the cost of applying together with applying later. A staggered plan can mean extra flights, duplicate temporary housing or a second evidence period. It may also make initial practical arrangements easier. The comparison should include emotional and caring responsibilities, not only the cheapest initial payment. No version removes the individual requirements or guarantees the later application.
Align permission and household dates
Check the expected expiry rules for dependants against the principal applicant and, where relevant, different parental permissions. A child born in the UK still needs a considered immigration and travel plan; birth location alone should not be treated as resolving status. Seek specific advice where needed before international travel or a later application. Keep the actual decision records, not just a family summary.
Plan housing for the household that will really arrive. Ask whether a property permits children or the intended occupancy, and verify the landlord and terms before paying. Research schooling or childcare through official local sources once the area is known. A professional relocation plan should also identify healthcare registration, emergency contacts and access to important documents without collecting sensitive information in a marketing form.
Give the family a decision calendar
Set dates for the principal qualification check, civil records, funds, applications, travel and budget review. Agree which commitments can be made before permission is granted and which must wait. If one application is delayed, identify who can travel, who cares for children and which bookings can move. A plan that depends on every decision arriving on the same day needs a fallback.
Use the household pack to make these decisions explicit. It includes one evidence row per person and a comparison of travel sequences. Its purpose is to reduce avoidable surprises and give a regulated adviser a concise account if the facts are complex. It does not issue a combined family eligibility verdict.
A worked decision example
An illustrative couple plans for the principal applicant to travel first, with a partner and child joining later. The household matrix identifies separate evidence dates, a possible civil-record delay and additional temporary housing costs. The family compares that sequence with travelling together, including childcare and the possibility of one delayed decision. The exercise does not assume that either sequence is eligible or cheaper. It shows why one headline family total is inadequate: each person has an application position, while the household also has a practical budget and caring responsibilities that continue regardless of when a decision arrives.
